James Wood, the book critic for the New Yorker and probably the most important book critic in the world, hated White Teeth. You can read the whole review if you want here: http://www.powells.com/review/2001_08_30.html. At the very least, read the excerpt from it below. Just a heads up, it's really hard, and you'll probably need to look up some words. I have faith in all of you to get it, eventually, with enough work. Do you agree with Wood's critique of Zadie Smith? Why or why not?

By the end of Chapter 14, we have gotten to know four different teenagers to various extents: Irie, Joshua, Millat, and Maggid (through his letters). Which character do you think would make the best friend? Why?

Re-read the passage that starts on page 336 when Samad says "There are no words" and ends at the break on page 337. Samad thinks that belonging is very important. Irie has very different ideas. Who do you agree with more - Samad or Irie? Why? Be sure to reference specific quotes from the passage.
